Susan Schreer Davis...
remembers hearing her childhood pastor ask for prayer one Sunday morning because his daughter's husband had a brain tumor. Sitting in the choir loft, she shuddered at the thought that she might face such a challenge, never dreaming that within five years she would be married and her own husband would need similar prayers.
Within ten years, however, she was a widowed mom, left raising two boys on her own. While the brain tumor took her husband's life, the journey to heaven's door led her closer to the God of heaven. His love broke through her pride and allowed a writer to come forth. She sang her way through her husband's illness and spent hours writing in journals. When all else failed, she closed her eyes and repeated, "I love you Lord and you love me." And that love prepared her to let go when it was time for one last goodbye.
As a single mom, Susan cried, cracked eggs on her head, knelt in prayer, and kept reminding her boys that they were special to God and that He was looking out for them. They grew from toddlers to teens and several stories, detailing their lives together, are now in print.
A decade later, a dashing widower won her heart and another twist in the journey tried her faith: a neuro muscular difficulty limited her mobility. Don, her new husband, even had to push her in a wheelchair in the Smithsonian on their honeymoon in DC. Adjusting to married life with a new body, fifteen extra pounds, and teenagers soon to launch into the world, Susan had to dig deep again and lean into the Everlasting Arms one more time.
Even the Promised Land held giants.
She's been married now for five years and finally received a diagnosis of mitochondrial disease. She can no longer climb mountains or walk for hours on the beach, but the God of heaven continues to make himself known in her life.
It's a journey; a constant battle to remain in His love. But His love is real and strong and up to the task if we'll give Him a chance.
